Host a Distinguished Visitor

Eligibility

Any school with a chapter of The Order of the Coif may host a distinguished visitor. Applications are evaluated using the following criteria:

  • Number of years since the chapter last hosted.

  • Limited resources of the applicant chapter to offer similar programming to the law school community; value the Coif Distinguished Visitor program may offer to the institution.

  • Special interest or connection between the institution and the subject of the Visitor’s scholarship and expertise. Examples may include but are not limited to the following: an upcoming symposium or event on a related subject; an existing program of study, emphasis, concentration, or other demonstration of the school's commitment to legal education in the subject area; or current law faculty members researching and publishing scholarship in the subject area.

Obligation of the Host School

The national office of the Order provides an honorarium for the Coif Distinguished Visitor and pays for their transportation and the cost of meals incurred while traveling to and from the host school. The host school is responsible for the expense of the Visitor’s meals, lodging, and local transportation. In addition, the host school will publicize the Visitor’s open address to bring it to the attention of all segments of the campus, the local professional community, law students, and alumni including the chapter’s Coif membership.

Invitations

The national office of the Order issues invitations to the Distinguished Visitor and posts information about the visitors on this website.

The Distinguished Visitors for the following year will be selected and chapters notified during the preceding summer.
